[Solved] QNAP - Send WakeOnLAN from your QNAP to wake up another network device 3 Posts 2 Users 0 Reactions 2,007 Views (@hans) Famed Member Admin Joined: 12 years ago Posts: 2834 Topic starter May 18, 2024 10:57 AM I found it surprisingly challenging to send a WOL (Wake on LAN) signal FROM a QNAP to wake up another network device. My situation: at night I run a backup (rsync) of my QNAP to another NAS, so I was looking for a commandline statement that could do this.Well, there is none standard on your QNAP, and OPKG seems dead as well, so what do you do?Well if you having an Intel (x64) based QNAP, then you're in luck.I did find this cool little tool written by GramThanos - super compact and it works on my QNAP (TVS873).Download the zip file, extract the binary, copy it to your QNAP (I dumped it for now in my Downloads directory) and make it executable:chmod +x WakeOnLANNext you can use it like so:./WakeOnLAN MACADDRESS BROADCASTADDRESSLook up the mac address of the device you'd like to wake up, and add "255.255.255.255" (default doesn't seem to work). All this would then look something like this:./WakeOnLAN 09:18:ab:d2:ef:9e 255.255.255.255For backup purposes, always good to look at the original page first, the binary that I used: (@Anonymous) Joined: 1 second ago Posts: 0 February 6, 2025 4:17 AM Can I use this on a Qnap with MArvell processor? If so, how to run it?If not, do you know other options? (@hans) Famed Member Admin Joined: 12 years ago Posts: 2834 Topic starter February 6, 2025 8:42 AM The binaries are unfortunately for Intel processors. You could compile it on your own (using the Makefile) but I can understand that this may not be easy to know how if you're never done it.Second issue is that there is no compile installed on a QNAP.Long story short: unless you know what you're doing, this may be more complex than on would want. You could try the "arm" version (Raspberry Pi) - this may or may not work.Unfortunately, I did not find an easy alternative 😞 Old versions of WakeOnLan Professional. 2025-04-20Is it possible to WOL via OpenVPN?Yes it is. Is there any way I can power on the PCs when tunnelling through OpenVPN?Yes, you've got following options: use OpenVPN in bridge mode (VPN & LAN share layer 2 segment, TAP device),forward UDP port 9 at your router from VPN side (when using VPN layer 3 subnet with TUN device),forward UDP port 9 at your router form Internet side.Newbie hints:Layers? router port forwarding: Most routers do not allow you to forward to broadcast, however if you can get shell access to your router (through telnet, ssh, serial cable, etc) you can implement this workaround:$ ip neighbor add 192.168.1.254 lladdr FF:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF dev net0Source: Wake On Lan on the network adapter (Linux way):ethtool -s eth0 wol gEnable WOL via /etc/networks/interfaces (Debian, Ubuntu, Mint probably too):$ cat /etc/network/interfaces.d/eth0auto eth0iface eth0 inet dhcp ethernet-wol gLinux tools:wol -p forwarded_port -i router_IP target_MAC_addressman wolwakeonlan -i 10.0.0.255 FF:00:00:00:00:30man wakeonlan
