Although calling out outlying values can be accomplished by using conditional formatting, the alerting feature inside Crystal Reports allows for more interactive identification of key data as well as pushing of those alerts to end users via BusinessObjects Enterprise's alerting functionality. A report alert is a custom notification created within Crystal Reports, triggered when a predetermined condition is met. An alert is comprised of three integral parts: NameTrigger (condition or threshold)Message Alerts serve the dual functions of bringing end-user attention to a certain condition being met and focusing end-user attention on specifically relevant data in a reportthereby increasing user efficiency. Some examples of reports in which alerts could provide a benefit are outlined in Table 11.1. Table 11.1. When this condition is true, the alert message will be displayed. Figure 11.3 displays a triggered alert from within the Crystal Reports Designer. Figure 11.3. A report alert being triggered. Creating, Editing, and Using Alerts To create or edit alerts in Crystal Reports, select the Report, Alerts, Create or Modify Alerts menu items. This dialog (shown in Figure 11.4) enables you to create a new alert, edit existing alerts, and remove existing alerts. Figure 11.4. Clicking Edit on the Create Alerts dialog opens the Edit Alert dialog. To create the alert, follow these steps: 1. Give the alert a name. This name should be meaningful and will be displayed to the user when the alert is triggered.2. Specify a condition for which to trigger the alert. An example of this would be {Customer.Last Year's Sales} . The condition is simply a formula using either Crystal or Basic syntax that evaluates to a true or false result. True means the alert should be triggered; false means that it should not.Note You can use other formulas and prompts inside this condition. Medical alert systems and all-in-one medical alert systems.In-Home Medical Alert SystemsAs the name suggests, in-home medical alert systems are designed for use within the home. Typically, in-home systems have a signal range that covers the entire home and possibly extends to the yard as well. “In-home medical alert systems offer a sense of security for those who spend most of their time indoors, and some include fall detection features,” explains Eichenberger.Mobile Medical Alert SystemsMobile-friendly medical alert systems can work anywhere outside the home that maintains access to the cellular network through which the system connects. Mobile alert devices come in the form of necklaces, bracelets and watches, and all feature a button that can connect a user to emergency services. “Typically, they’re battery powered and have GPS tracking technology that tells others where the user is in an emergency situation,” says Eichenberger.All-in-One Medical Alert SystemsAll-in-one medical alert systems combine the features of in-home and mobile systems in a single device. “All-in-one systems provide flexibility and protection at home and on the go,” says Eichenberger. “In most cases, all-in-one medical alert systems are monitored 24/7 by company personnel and include GPS tracking.” How Much Medical Alert Systems Cost Medical alert systems usually require a monthly monitoring fee ranging from $19.95 to $29.99, says Eichenberger. Other fees some providers charge include equipment fees, installation fees, processing fees and activation fees. Users may also pay more for add-on features and components, such as fall detection, GPS tracking functionality, medication reminders, lockboxes or extra alert buttons. Many companies also charge a lower monthly rate for annual plans than monthly payment plans.Consider the starting monthly fees for several popular medical alert systems below.Note: All prices are accurate at time of publication. Prices may vary depending on the plan selected.Systems with more advanced functionality, such as GPS tracking and 24/7 monitoring, tend to cost more per month. Key Medical Alert System Considerations Before buying a medical alert system, Eichenberger recommends reading the fine print regarding fees, cancellation policies, services included and capabilities and limitations of the specific system. She also suggests considering the following details carefully.System type: Does the user mostly require protection at home, outside of the home or both? The answer to this question can help determine whether an in-home system, mobile system or all-in-one system would be the best investment.Cost: “Understanding the costs and all that’s included is the biggest factor one should consider before investing in a medical alert system,” she says. The subscription cost is likely to cover the device(s) associated with the medical alert system, monitoring services and customer service. Fully understand what’s included in the cost and what the ongoing subscription cost would be, she says.Monitoring Preference: “Monitored systems. Exchange Rate Alert Inner Page Slide.
