Polaris is only about 1deg from the CP.This is because the closer you get to the CP the more inaccurate the sync/alignment will be. Even a very small platesolve error can create a very large RA error. In the worst case a plate solve error of 1 arcsec can create an 12 hour RA error!Imagine standing at the north pole and taking a small randon step away from the pole and then try to accurately work out which longitude you ar on!You don't say which mount driver you are using, but I know that EQMOD will not allow a sync point to be created within about 10deg of the CP.
