As expected, Netscape today revamped its lineup of Web servers, rolling outaggressive price cuts for existing offerings and new products clearlyintended to one-up Microsoft's recently introduced Internet server. As previously reported by CNET, the company dropped the price of its Web server for Windows NT and Unix including support for Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption to $295.Renamed today the FastTrack Server, the product includes support forSSL 3.0--an upgraded version of Netscape's software forencrypting communications across the Internet--and the Netscape NavigatorGold 2.0 HTML editing software. Although Netscape said that the FastTrack Server was officially areplacement for its low-end Communications Server, which was priced at $495 but did not includeSSL support, the FastTrack server more closely resembles the SSL-enabled Commerce Server. The Commerce Server was priced at $1,295 for its Windows NT versionand $2,995 for the Unix version. Netscape's price cuts on its entry-level server were prompted by anincreasingly competitive market, which was jolted last month when Microsoftstarted giving away its Windows NT Web server, the Internet InformationServer, for free. Like the new FastTrak Server, IIS includes SSL encryption support."No matter what [Netscape] says is replacing what, the bottom line isthey're offering an SSL-enabled server for a few hundred dollars. This ismore of the same downward spiral [in cost]...I think they see securityas essential [for all of their Web servers]," said Adam Schoenfeld, vice president and senior analyst at Jupiter Communications in New York. To fill the high end of its product spectrum, Netscape introduced the $995Enterprise Server 2.0, a Web server for Windows NT and Unix that comesbundled with Netscape Navigator Gold 2.0, Verity's text search engine, theLiveWire site management and development tools, MKS Integrity Enginedocument management software, and SSL 3.0 support. An even more extensiveversion of Enterprise Server priced at $1,495 comes with LiveWire Pro, aversion of LiveWire that includes the Informix Online database for developers. MKS Integrity Engine, which was shipped today also as a standalone product byMortice Kern Systems, provides intranetusers with version control facilities for Web pages so that updates and changes can be more easily tracked and documented. The software provides detailedaudit trails for pages, editing-access controls, and archiving capabilities. And to refute Microsoft's claim that its new Internet Information Serverserves static pages faster than Netscape's server, Netscape announced thatboth the FastTrack Server and the new Enterprise Server will feature anext-generation HTTP (hypertext transfer protocol) engine that greatlyimproves the previous server products' performance. Both servers include Java and JavaScript support so that developers cancreate server-side database applications such as credit-card authorizationapplets. The company said that beta copies of FastTrack Server and Enterprise Serverwill be available for free 90-day evaluation testing later this month onNetscape's Web site and will be available commercially in the second quarter. But that's not all. Netscape also took a bold step to move into Microsoft and LotusDevelopment's backyard with the introduction ofNetscape Replaces Search Engine - CNET

Fact you need IE 5.5 and above to use this browser. Is is based on the core-engine of IE, but far more superior then IE itself. If you love the Tab Browsing of Netscape you have it here. Opening multiple web-pages of about 28 is not an issue for me, while writing this review. Searching from the address field is very cool, i.e. you just enter 'g' followed by whatever subject you want to find for using the Google search engine. Very efficient! One of the important feature is that, this application take up less resources than IE !! Try it, it is getting more advance with each version released. Great job Anderson Che ! Mitch: "Excellent!!!!!!!!!!!" This browser is great. I am not sure if many of you are aware of this, but one of Avant's best features is the Quick Search. Well at least in my opinion. Quick Search allows you to search directly from the address bar by using keywords or key letters to get search results from any search engine available on the web. For example you can put the letter "g" to represent Google, then place a space after that, and then put your keyword and hit enter or go. That is all and you will get your search results from the desired search engine. You can create your own Quick Searches which only takes common sense to do. The search bar is not needed for an easy search. Infact I think its better to do quick searches since your working with a single input box. Quick search is Avant's answer to the Address/Search box combo. It just does it in different way. Probably the best way since you can have all the search engines at your finger tips. You just have to create them by going to Tools, Avant Browser Options, then down to Search Engine, click on the Quick Search button, and you can set your search shortcuts there. Avant has many other features other than this of course, but I felt I needed to elaborate more on this, because I thought it was a feature that was probably over-looked. It has the usual pop-up blockers, ad-blocker, cache cleaner, disabling of internet content such as flash, pictures, and ActiveX for a faster browsing. Tabbed browsing makes all the difference and cool features such as saving websites after exit are a plus. Tim: I'veDownload netscape search engine - maioorama

AOL/Time-Warner owns Netscape now and appears actively engaged in driving this browser into the ground. UPDATE: AOL and Time Warner split. AOL succeeded in shutting down Netscape. NCSA Mosaic - The FIRST web browser. No longer under active development. Last version 3.0 supports WinNT and 2.1.1 for MacIntosh. Hot Java - From Sun Microsystems. No longer under development since Solaris 8 and later are shipped with Netscape. Lynx - Text Only - No graphics, tables or frames, but runs from DOS Browser Functions and Components Render Engine Every web browser has an HTML rendering engine designed to read the embeded HTML tags and use those tags to arrange content and format the text on the web page. The rendering engine is the guts of the web browser and no two browsers will render a web page the same way. This is why any good web developer will test the web page in several web browsers (Internet Explorer, Netscape, Mozilla) that run on several different platforms (Windows, Linux, Unix and Mac). Cache When a web browser downloads a web page, it stores that web page in a special location on the computer called the cache. Storing web pages and the content inside them allows the browser to skip re-downloading that content if the web page have not been changed on the web server. This speeds up the web browsing experience, particularly when hitting the back button to return to the previous web page. The cache contains all the files you have pulled and viewed in your web browser. In most cases, web pages and files are left on your computer until a certain size limit is reached. At that point, the browser will delete older files from previous web sessions and replace them with newer files from whatever web server you are browsing. If your caching functions are set to the defaults, you will have difficulty with dynamically generated pages. Sites such as CNN and CNBC change the content of their web pages several times a day. The default settings in the web browser will result in your seeing the first web page you browse to for as long as the browser is open. You can change these settings so that in just a minute past when the content changed at the site, your web browser will pull the new web page. Bookmarks and Shortcuts To help you find things again later, most browsers offer a bookmark function to allow you to store the address of the page in a list of favorite sites. This list of favorites can be browsed later and when the listed.
