Untitled Painting (1989) was one of the last artworks Keith Haring created before passing away due to AIDS-related complications. The piece featured a rhythmic purple pattern in the top left corner of the canvas, but was purposefully left blank as a commentary on the HIV/AIDS epidemic, which took the lives of millions around the world, including many from the LGBTQ+ community.A user on X (formerly Twitter) named @DonnelVillager recently enforced AI to imagine what the rest of the composition would have looked like. He prefaced the post by saying how sad the story behind Haring’s painting was and that, thanks to AI, “we can complete what he couldn’t finish!”Lots of people angry about this, but I used AI to figure out how Keith would feel and it seems he is happy with the outcome. From iconic classical sculpture. A: Do you think your style of painting will change in the future? KK: As far as the direction I’m going at the moment, I’m currently studying the theory of visual signaling in my artwork. The signals that we see as a society that inform us of their meaning by learned experience. I thought, what if I took visual signaling and combined that with the theme of entropy– nature’s tendency to create randomness—and brought that into my paintings. So, as you move away from the chaotic focal point in the painting things get more organized. I’m still refining my process, but that’s the direction my artwork is headed now. Ninadoes not see towers in the painting; she sees architecture maybe, but notmodern towers. When Nina has stopped looking at everything else, she plans tolook at these still life paintings. Eventually she will simply look at blankwalls. Lianne teases Martin, asking what he has on his walls. He tells her hekeeps bare walls—almost bare—both at home and at the office.The couple’s argument continues: God does or does not exist and invoking Godis a way to excuse bad behavior. Martin hunches down to where Nina is sittingand leans toward her. First they kill and then people try to understand them,he says; perhaps people will eventually learn their names, but they must killto get the attention. And the argument continues. Where he sold his work. Ephemera from the Keith Haring Foundation displays the range of objects that brought his work to the broader public, like patches, stickers, a skateboard, and a cap. In this same room, a painting shows a huge gray pig with a green nose eating orange human figures. The paradox of Pop Art is its simultaneous embrace and critique of capitalism, and Haring is not unique in that regard. He’s also not wrong that by making his work more accessible in price, he truly made his art something that everybody could own in some fashion.In the final rooms, we return to the artist’s mixtapes, some party photos (Polaroids were the Instagram of their day, and they look exactly like an influencer’s online grid) and his famous work for ACT UP and AIDS awareness. One painting, drained of the artist’s characteristic color, presents a human figure on a black backdrop attacked by a sperm with devil horns. Another painting from 1989 is unfinished, a purple, black, and white world on its way to becoming just a year before his passing. The drips of purple paint are dried on the canvas forever. The layout of the Broad Museum’s first-floor gallery brings us back where we started — back to the babies at the top of the New York City subway map.
