FOOD TRIP EGYPT - FOOD TRIP

Each week we review a food related app. This week it’s Food Tripping – find out what the Lempert Report thought. What it says it does: Find great alternatives to fast food wherever you are. Food Tripping locates the closest eateries, juice joints, farmers’ markets, microbreweries, and more through your phone’s GPS. With a growing database of eateries, Food Tripping makes it simple to find healthier and more thoughtful food while you’re on the road, or at home looking for inspiration. And you as the user can contribute to the ever growing database of great finds all around the country. What it actually does: Food Tripping allows users to discover healthy, sustainable food options in their area or a place they may be traveling. The app lets users search by location, name, popularity, and category - and provides the contact details for each location. Users can keep track of the places they've been and mark their favorite spots to come back later. Users can even suggest new businesses offering healthy, local, and sustainable fare and share their findings via Facebook, Twitter, and email. How useful is the information for target audience?: The app is very useful for those who are traveling and looking for local foods or for those who are looking for local foods in their area.Ease of use: The app’s interface is easy to use, and provides a map that is very user friendly. Adding suggestions is a breeze and helps users feel more connected to their community.Who would best benefit from the app?: The app is great for those who are interested in alternative places to eat, local foods, wines, and more. October 21, 2010 | 12:00am Contributor Ricardo Pamintuan’s Lifestyle article last week on food tripping in America made me relish in my head those gustatory challenges I went through living and vacationing in the US. I use the word challenge because when I’m there, I usually am on a hand-to-mouth existence.Everything boils down to the fact that I do the opposite of what Filipinos living in the US always tell vacationing relatives and friends from the Philippines: To enjoy your stay in the land of plenty that is America, never convert. I therefore should stop whining about how I have to shell out $2 for a bottle of cranberry juice that makes it more than P88 when I can get Gatorade here for P20-plus something. I don’t even check the price of Gatorade in Manila. I just drink up.There were episodes in my life in America, however, when I didn’t even have money — or had too little of it — to convert. When the exchange rate was still P26:$1, I could still afford to pamper myself and remember paying in 1995 $28 for an order of crispy pata from a Pinoy restaurant called Toto’s in Glendale, California. I was treating out cousins in LA and they wanted Filipino food and so I got them that — although at the back of my head I kept telling myself: I just blew almost P800 on crispy pata!By the time the exchange rate had ballooned to P38:$1 and, later, at P55:$1, I became even more determined to hang on to my precious dollars. Maybe that’s the reason why I’m still here even if I’m a US immigrant. Flying to the US is now just purely for vacations. But I’ve already collected a treasure trove of memories — plus tips on how to do food tripping in the US — PG style, PG as in patay-gutom.As a kid, I would die a thousand times every time my mother would pack snacks for out-of-town trips (during a Baguio vacation with my then teenage brother and an aunt, she brought adobo that they ate at the hotel morning, noon and night).I only realized the value of bringing your own baon when I started working — at 17 — and I discovered for myself that money is not something you just pick up along the way. You work for it — and so save a great part
