Importing DVD (.vob files) into iMovie using ffmpegX Hi, I am wondering if anyone has used ffmpegX to convert vob files into DV format. I am having issues with the actual import by iMovie as the aspect ratio gets screwed up and everything looks short and fat. I use the DVD (4:3) video picture setting in ffmpegX . I am using iMovie 6.0.4. Anyway, my main question is: has anyone used ffmpegX successfully to convert from DVD to DV and iMovie? I know that MPEG StreamClip works well with the QuickTime mpeg2 component, and neither iSquint nor HandBrake have produced the quality mp4 files needed for TV viewing. I guess I have to shell out the $20 bucks if I want high quality conversion. Any ideas and comments are greatly appreciated G4 400 (AGP), Mac OS X (10.4.11), Sonnet CPU 1.4 Ghz, ATI Radeon 9200 AGP Posted on Mar 29, 2008 3:14 PM Posted on Mar 29, 2008 3:33 PM No, I have never used ffmpegX for this, but if you need to convert the VOB files back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle you need mpegStreamclip: which is free, as well as the the Apple mpeg2 plugin : which is a mere $20. Another possibility is to use DVDxDV: which costs $25. Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.

Fact that a standard CD-ROM which will hold 700MB of ISO data will holdalmost 800MB (799) of VCD data...Now I'm thinking this leaves out room on the burn for ERROR CORRECTION...so your file has to be perfect for the player, and suchmaybe If you re-burn at 2x???Just a thought forty-two and ffmpegX will. I do not have much experience with 42 in that respect though... I mainly used it for Divx.Using ffmpegX, it is important to use the mpeg2enc engine as opposed to the ffmpeg engine. This sounds confusing, but its not a typo. Mpeg2enc will generate compliant streams as will the Toast VCD component. Did that MPEG file I posted work for you? That was created with Quicktime. Member I tried using the mpeg2enc engine, the mpeg file it turned out was only the first 40 seconds of the movie, and it was not VCD compliant either. I tried 42 again just to check, and the mpeg file it turned out wasn't compliant. :)-The box said "Windoze 98 or better," so I bought a mac. What exactly is the .idx file ? Member The IDX/SUB collectively are called VobSubs and you play them along with the video as you do any other subtitle file. Now I know what to do with the .sub file Are you sure? This SUB file isn't the text-based file you may be used to, but contains images or BMPs direct from the DVD. The IDX can be opened in Notepad (not the SUB file, though), and has the timing information as well as a bunch of other stuff. The two work together to provide the subs for the movie. Most software and many hardware file players can display them. You may have to install DirectVobSub first.What's this have to do with ffmpegX? The .idx file itself points to the associated .sub file, so you don't have to tell ffmpegX about the .sub file. Note: this only works for encodings with the 'DVD mpeg2enc' preset and 'Decode with mplayer' activated. Forum Video Newbie / General discussions How can I change the Title name of a video I downloaded from Youtube? Thread--> Member How can I change the Title name of a video I downloaded from Youtube? It seems Apple iPhone 12 won't let you keep any Youtube Videos to play on your phone. Whenever I add videos I've downloaded to my Mac the physical .mp4 video then using iTunes I upload the video to my iPhone within a few days Apple deletes all the Youtube videos from my phone. Almost like a Bank taking money out of my account money just disappears and so do the videos they just disappear from my iPhone. That said I tried just changing the file name but when I examined the .mp4 file by just playing the Youtube video on my iMac I see the Title in the title bar above the video screen has the original Video name not the file name I changed it to. I'd like to change the video Title and perhaps it will allow the video to be played and not removed by the Apple demons from my iPhone. Any help with how to change the actual Title embedded somewhere in the Video file would be a good challenge here. Thanks Member I believe you can remux with ffmpeg to remove metadata: method: since metadata is plain text you can use a hex editor to overwrite it. Ie, change Title=VideoTitle to Title=xxxxxxxxxx. I'm a Super Moderator Apple phones are not worth using anymore since they can't be repaired by outside sources even with genuine parts plus they do what you described because it's built into the software. Apple never used to remove Youtube videos from the iPhones, this is something new and very strange that they can access my iPhone and delete files at their will. What will Apple do next? Member I just tried MP3tag and the interface is nice and the solution is easy with the app. THANKS Member Tried ffmpegX but it doesn't work with MacOS BigSur Member I use a walled off disk manager (search for "disk drive" in iTunes) to house my mp3's. videos and pdfs - they all play etc as they should but without having to use iTunes, upload them from your pc via a file browser .Apple not allowing a filesystem , stops me using my phone like a pc. Also , I dislike iTunes, it's as usable as two bricks tied together.
