It is not uncommon to have a hard drive error on your Security DVR or Network Video Recorder (NVR). Hard drives have spinning discs (or platters) inside which are constantly rotating at 5400rpm or 7200rpm. Taking in to consideration how fast they are moving, and that there is a small needle reading data from the drive platters, sort of like an old record player, it is possible to have a hiccup in the incredibly delicate process happening inside of your DVR's hard drive. Errors can occur on a new drive or one that has been functioning well for over 2 years. It is not possible to predict drive life, or prevent an incidence from occurring. And an error occurring once on a particular brand and model of hard drive does not mean that manufacturer or model is bad. You simply don't know when it will happen. But when errors do happen, or the drive fails and drops out on the DVR you will get a error notice on your DVR stating there has been a hard drive failure. There are mainly 2 types of failure: Bad sectors have developed on the drive and they are causing read/write errors, which essentially make the drive "stuck" when it reaches a certain point or capacity. These bad sectors can be physical which will warrant replacement of the drive, or read write errors which can be corrected with a simple drive format from with the DVR user menu. Complete failure where the drive is no longer recognizable to your DVR, unrecognizable to a PC as well, and warrants replacementIf you suspect your DVR hard drive to have an issue, or receive an alert stating drive failure, please watch the following video that explains in detail how to check the status of your hard drive, and diagnose whether the drive is good or bad. If there is an error, the video will also show how to format your drive.Checking the status of the hard drive inside your Security DVR RecorderLearn how to check the status of the internal hard drives of your DVR recorder and format them to recover usable video recording space. If you find your DVR beeping or buzzing, it is because there is a setting in the DVR that activates the internal buzzer to sound when a hard drive error is detected. Signs such as frequent freezes, blue screen of death error messages, and system crashes to signs of irrevocable damage, such as clicking or beeping. In the early stages of a failing hard drive, you might notice your computer freeze and crash more often. Files might appear to be corrupt one moment, yet work fine the next. These are all telltale hard drive failing signs, and you should start backing up important data (if you aren’t already). While often mistaken for the read/write head, this is actually the spacer that helps the heads stay airborne over the platters. The actual heads are much smaller. When your hard drive fails, you might encounter boot errors in your BIOS when starting your computer, or “USB device malfunctioned” error messages when plugging in a failed external drive. You also may notice some physical signs of hard disk failure, such as clicking, beeping, or other strange noises.Need Data Recovered from a Failed Hard Drive? Why is my Hard Drive Not Booting? If a constant boot error greets you instead of your Windows operating system (or your OS of choice) whenever you turn on your computer, your hard drive may be at fault. This error can be due to a corruption of the drive’s boot sector, or more serious physical damage to the device. Why is my Hard Drive Clicking? The clicking noise you hear occurs when the read/write heads can no longer read or write. The heads are mounted on an arm that swings back and forth, and when the heads stop functioning, the arm continues to move, producing the noise. The “click of death” often happens because the heads have failed or have been severely damaged. Continuing to run a clicking hard drive without repairs can cause the drive’s condition to worsen considerably, so hard drives exhibiting these symptoms should be sent to a professional data recovery lab immediately.Learn more about hard drive plattersWhy is my Hard Drive Beeping?A hard drive will beep if something is preventing the platters from spinning. The beeping noise comes from the drive’s spindle motor as it tries to spin the platters. Typically, this symptom occurs when the read/write heads fail to float above the platter surfaces and instead clamp down on them. Only data recovery specialists can safely address this issue.Learn more about beeping hard drives…Why isn’t my Hard Drive Spinning Up?One reason a hard drive will not spin up is if electricity cannot flow through its printed control board (PCB). This situation can occur if the circuit board wears out or develops an electrical short, causing drive failure. Common culprits include water damage to the PCB and power surges. Once the PCB has failed completely, only a professional can successfully repair or replace
