Quick Links Here's What Computer I Used I Chose Fedora as My Distro These Are the Apps My Kid Uses I Wish I Could Say There Haven't Been Any Issues Summary For school, my son just needs a PC capable of loading a web browser; a Chromebook is the traditional choice. Instead, I installed Fedora Silverblue on an old laptop and sent my kid to school with just the web bookmarks he needed. Sadly, parental controls on Linux is rather lacking. My son goes to a school that doesn't provide laptops but requires kids to have one. The needs are simple and easily satisfied by a cheap Chromebook. By using resources already available to me, though, I saved that Chromebook money. What the School Required Our school utilizes IXL, an online learning platform that tests kids on various skills based on their grade level. To access this, all we need is a web browser. Most websites are tested against Google Chrome these days, so any machine that can run Chrome or a Chromium-based browser will do. The school also uses Google Docs for typing up documents. I could try to teach my son how to use LibreOffice for school work instead, but given that I don't know what tech the teachers know how to use, best not to disrupt the workflow in ways they might not be able to help a kid with. I'll let my kid stick with Google Docs. That's it. IXL and Google Docs. Easy. Here's What

At this year's Google IO developer conference, Google quietly revealed the fact that all Chromebooks launched this year will be Linux-ready right out of the box.Last year the company began to make it possible to run desktop Linux on Chrome OS and since then more Chromebooks have been able to run Linux. However, in the future all of them will be able to do so regardless of whether they are ARM or Intel-based.Before now, running Linux on your Chromebook required you to use the open-source program Crouton to run Debian, Ubuntun and Kali Linux but the setup process did require some technical know-how and wasn't accessible to all Chrome OS users. What is a Google Chromebook?Google hails Chromebook impact on schoolsChromebooks are getting a better search box powered by Google AssistantNow running Linux on your Chrome OS device is a much more straightforward process. Simply open the Chrome OS app switcher and type “Terminal” in the search box. This will launch the Termina VM which begins running a Debian 9.0 Stretch Linux container and you're now running Debian Linux in Chrome OS.Ubuntu and Fedora can also be run on Chrome OS but their setup still requires a bit more work to get up and running.Three operating systems at onceUnlike running Windows on Mac from Boot Camp, Linux on Chromebooks are not dual-boot and instead you're running both operating systems simultaneously. This means you can browse files in the Chrome OS file manager and open them with Linux apps such as LibreOffice without having to initiate a Linux session. In fact, in the latest canary Chrome OS release, you can even use the file manager to move files across Chrome OS, Google Drive, Linux and Android.Sign up to the TechRadar Pro newsletter to get all the top news, opinion, features and guidance your business needs to succeed! While the average user may not have a need for this kind of workflow, developers can greatly benefit from it as it allows them to develop for all three operating systems from one platform. As we noted in January, WINE 7 now has native 32-bit support – meaning that 64-bit WINE is able to install and run 32-bit Windows programs without needing 32-bit support in the underlying OS. Many games on Valve's Steam platform are still 32-bit, though. This will in time have knock-on effects on Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), which derives from Fedora. It may affect other distros, too, if they use packages which are principally built or maintained by Red Hat contributors. Debian, openSUSE Tumbleweed, Mageia, and Alpine, plus many smaller distros, still offer x86-32 editions. For clarity, note that there are different flavours of x86-32.
