Part to come about as Blu-Ray is here to stay for a long while. Why is no one coming up with a full on blu ray player with mini DisplayPort (Thunderbolt 3/USB-C) or something, at least to use imac as screen and bypassing OS. Guess it's too niche. I have the LG BE14NU40. Actually 2 of them. 1 at home and 1 at work. They're USB 3 and have been my favorite external drives I've used in years.OSX can read/write data BR discs just fine natively and even VLC and some codecs you can playback some normal BR movies without having to purchase those other Mac BluRay playback software. I started using BR's on Mac around 2010-2011.Currently though I am using the Pioneer BDR211UBK in a USB3 external enclosure. At 16x, that is only 72 MegaBytes per second which doesn't come anywhere near close to saturating USB 3.0.You can read this article to get a little idea of how the industry is making it difficult for 4K playback in general. #11 I've been using the LG BE12lU38 USB 2 drive with my mid-2011 iMac for many years. Mostly to rip BluRay disks with MakeMKV. #12 I use an external Panasonic bluray drive, MakeMkv to rip the bluray and Kodi to playback the ripped bluray. Of course this is with 1080p bluray not 4K bluray. For my purposes I use Kodi to playback bluray from my AppleTVs.EDIT: Maybe this is what you are looking for: It appears that for $85 you get a bluray drive and software to playback the bluray movie on the Mac directly (no rip needed). I am considering this drive and software and was wondering if any one has any opinions on this? SuperDrive btw. Apple seems to have absolutely no plan to update that superdrive after all these years and I don't want to entirely rely on streaming.I'm aware that there are a few USB external blu-ray drive options and so are the required 3rd party software like Aiseesoft, Macgo, etc, from some old discussion on this topic. But I am interested in more recent set up (past two years or so). Perhaps newer and better stuff, both hardware and software. Can anyone with his/her newer imac (2015-2017) with blu-ray set up that works really well now let me know what your setup is? I use an external Panasonic bluray drive, MakeMkv to rip the bluray and Kodi to playback the ripped bluray. Of course this is with 1080p bluray not 4K bluray. Haven't gotten to the point of actually putting a movie on a DVD9 disc and testing in our Panasonic Bluray player yet. I thought videos had to be in the AVCHD (m2ts) format for burning HD videos on standard DVDs. I didn't know set-top Bluray players could play MKV videos on standard DVDs.BTW, my normal viewing of captured videos will be from an external hard drive attached to my i5 PC. Only once in a great while will I want to burn a movie on a DVD9 disc. Thanks, mks Member The majority of Bluray players made today play standalone files such as MKV, MP4, TS or AVI etc. Some don't, but most do. Before Bluray players had the ability to play files via a USB input, they could only read them from disc (Bluray or DVD), but if they can play them via USB they should be able to play them via disc. The files would be burned to disc just as you'd burn any other data file. ie not as any sort of video disc. I don't know the model of your player, but you might want to check the manual. Not all video/audio formats are supported for every container, but they mostly play the common combinations. Support for h264 High Profile, level 4.1 is fairly normal. It's even hard to buy a TV these days that doesn't have a built-in USB media player. They'll usually play all the common standalone file types. Both my TV and Bluray player will happily read the contents of a hard drive up to 2TB in size, either FAT32 or NTFS, although some players still only support FAT32. Heavy DRM) to play only this software suite will play a purchased disk. The other players you quoted do not have Blu-ray disk playback, because of the cost of licensing it.Assuming the disk does not recognize you'll need to remove the drive, wipe the drivers, and reinstall. Hope you kept everything it needs. 1: When you put the Blu-ray in does the computer identify it as the correct disk?A: I'm not sure what you mean by this. So I'll put it this way; when the BluRay is in the Drive, under My Computer, it shows this: this is the "Yes" portion of the solution, I hate to sound like that guy, but my BluRay Drive did not come with any Media Suite. It was a pre-built computer purchased in 2010 from Best Buy pre-loaded with Windows 7 Home Premium. That is all.2: The other players you quoted do not have Blu-ray disk playback, because of the cost of licensing it.A: VLC was the only player I used(and still use) for playing my BluRay discs. In this case, the only one that I had at the time was AVATAR. It had also worked in Windows Media Player but it had some buffering issues since my processor wasn't very good at the time and WMP uses more processing power than VLC. Again, hate to be "that guy", but it's true. VLC was capable of playing my BluRay's back then. Albeit, I have NO IDEA what's changed in the last 1.5 years with. External Bluray RW Drive.
