The Lotus, even if the story was focused around the Wolf. Adding more antagonists and adding some reasonable amount of character to them could only have made the experience better. Multiplayer is as good as ever. Coming up against human opponents is really the best way to get the full Battle Realms experience. Only then do you really start to see all of the battle gear and techniques instituted in truly creative and planned ways. Adding to the mix and fun of multiplayer are the new units for the four sides (even the Dragon Clan although they haven't technically been started at the time of Winter of the Wolf). Each clan gets an upgrade to the female unit, which can be done at the upgraded "town center" of each side. All of these units can take on a unique special ability or one that will allow them to drain the power of towers and distribute it among friendly units in different ways like health and stamina. It's an interesting twist to the multiplayer side of things and can change the balance of a game if used correctly. The other units all are close ranged melee fighters that can be have two different special abilities each. They can also be useful, but weren't the ultra fantastic additions that I had been hoping for after all this time since Battle Realms' release.VerdictWhile I wasn't really entirely thrilled by Winter of the Wolf, it does have something really good going for it. The package comes complete with the original Battle Realms, meaning you'll have a lot more good gaming hours ahead if you have yet to take a plunge into this fantastic Asian influenced world. There are games that are released during the year that for some reason or another, people just don't really go out and buy, no matter how many good reviews it gets from dolts like us or the word of mouth it gets from gamers. Liquid Entertainment's first game, Battle Realms was one of these. It had some great units, great play mechanics, interesting back-story, and terrific balancing. It somehow slipped out of view however, maybe under the haze of anticipation of WarCraft III when that game was still planned for a 2001 release... either way, it didn't get the sales it deserved. Still, Ubi Soft decided to get behind the developer to make an expansion to the game, which I was very happy about remembering expansions such as StarCraft: Brood Wars and Age of Empires II: The Conquerors. Unfortunately, Winter of the Wolf is short and filled with a mixed bag of generally easy levels despite the addition of some new units and heroes. What I was hoping would be a great addition turned out more average than anything else. Winter of the Wolf takes place before the events in Battle Realms. It follows the story of the Wolf Clan and their history of flight from their homeland and eventual slavery that was really only hinted at in the first game. The Wolf Clan, the bruisers of the Battle Realms universe, used to be a completely peaceful folk that lived in concert with the land on their own little island paradise.
