FontLab VI allows you to generate composite and auto glyphs using one of two code syntaxes: the extended syntax based on Glyph Construction syntax, and the legacy syntax that is backwards-compatible with FontLab Studio 5 and is used in the alias.dat file. In Font > Generate Glyphs > Custom, if the Use legacy (FLS5) code checkbox is off, the code you input will be interpreted as extended syntax; if the checkbox is on, the input will be interpreted as legacy syntax. In auto layers, if the custom recipe starts with =, the contents of the field will be interpreted as extended syntax; if it starts with any other character, the recipe will be interpreted as legacy syntax. Legacy syntax»If the Font > Generate Glyphs > Custom > ==Use legacy (FLS5) code checkbox is on, FontLab expects the glyph generation code to use the legacy syntax. The glyph generation code in the legacy syntax is a series of entries separated by newline, space, comma or semicolon. Spaces are not permitted within an entry, in this syntax. FontLab will use in the alias.dat file to try to find the recipe that describes the generation of the glyph that uses that name. If it cannot find the recipe for that glyph name, it will try to find a recipe for a synonym glyph name (the synonyms are defined in standard.nam). For example: When you generate the uni00C0 glyph (“À”), FontLab will look up alias.dat for a glyph recipe for uni00C0. If it does not find any such recipes, it’ll look for recipes for synonym glyph names. Agrave is a synonym for uni00C0, and several recipes for Agrave are provided in alias.dat. If it finds one or more such recipes, it will: Find the first recipe, and then will find the A base glyph, then find the the grave.case mark glyph, and insert them as components into Agrave glyph. The Agrave glyph will get the advance width of A since that is the base glyph. If any of the component glyphs cannot be found in the font, FontLab will attempt a fallback recipe, which is to insert the A glyph and the gravecomb glyph. FontLab is both the name of a company, FontLab Ltd, and the former name of their flagship font editor product, now called FontLab Studio. Since the early 2000s, FontLab Studio has been the dominant software tool for commercial/retail digital font development. This is partly because the once-dominant Fontographer by Altsys ceased development after its acquisition by Macromedia. During Macromedia's merger/acquisition by Adobe Systems in 2005, Macromedia sold Fontographer's rights and code to FontLab Ltd, so FontLab now owns and maintains both of the most popular font editing/development tools.HistoryOriginally, there were two separate companies. SoftUnion Ltd of St. Petersburg, Russia made the software, under lead programmer Yuri Yarmola. Pyrus North America Ltd, of the USA was formed in 1992 to distribute and market FontLab 2.0 for Microsoft Windows, which came out in 1993 (there was no Mac OS version at the time). Eventually Pyrus bought all the rights to FontLab; hired Mr. Yarmola; and renamed the company. Today they have a wide range of font editing and conversion tools. Programming is still done by a Russian team in St. Petersburg, and management is mainly in Panama, where the company is incorporated.Fact|date=September 2008FontLab's first Mac OS product was FontLab 3 for Mac, in 1998. It has special features for editing Chinese, Japanese and Korean fonts.Back when fonts came in different formats and were platform specific Fontlab also began to create a line of font conversion utilities. ScanFont, a tool for converting scans/bitmaps of glyphs into vector glyphs/fonts was part of FontLab 2. But in the next version it was split off and became its own more complete and powerful application. Next came TransType, a font converter for moving fonts between TrueType, OpenType and Type 1 formats and between Macintosh and Windows platforms.
