Lake Lanier had its highest recorded levels of chlorophyll in 2019 and in 2020 levels still exceeded limits set by Georgia’s Environmental Protection Division, according to The Chattahoochee press release. The levels over the past two years are the highest they have been since the EPD started testing Lake Lanier in 2000.According to the press release, the pollution comes from factors including storm water runoff from fertilizers used on lawns and farms, treated sewage discharges, failing septic systems and clogged sewer pipes from improperly disposing fats, oils and grease.“All these things may seem minor in nature, the mentality that, ‘Putting fertilizer on my lawn isn’t a big deal,’” said Dale Caldwell, headwaters director of Chattahoochee Riverkeeper to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “Multiply that by thousands or millions (of people) and you start to have a significant impact.”The Chattahoochee Riverkeeper is working with local governments, utilities and other stakeholders to address the problem, according to The Chattahoochee press release. Due to recent heavy rains and high water levels at Lake Lanier, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineering has closed several designated swim areas due to the agency's high-water action plan.The Army Corps has closed 17 of the 18 designated swim areas they manage. The only one that remains open is the one located at the Ducket Mill Campground in Gainesville. They may remain closed for a couple weeks or longer.As of Monday morning, the water levels at Lake Lanier rose to more than three feet above its full pool elevation of 1,072 feet above sea level.The Army Corps is now continuously releasing water to lower the lake level, causing a rise in water levels and swift currents in the Chattahoochee River downstream.High water levels and turbulent flows have made also made it unsafe to swim or boat in the Chattahoochee River, according to the the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Corps.The Army Corps said it is also unsafe to swim or boat in the Chattahoochee River due to high water levels for up to two weeks or longer. Landmarks beneath Lake Laniers waters revealed in recently discovered maps Original purpose of old charts uncertain U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Ranger Russ Lundstrum has been studying an old set of maps of Lake Lanier. The maps predate construction of the lake and show landmarks including cemeteries, churches and roads. Large farms, orchards and chicken houses that once dotted the landscape in North Georgia are now covered by Lake Lanier’s deep waters. But they can be found in notations on old maps recently discovered in a U.S. Geological Survey warehouse in Washington, D.C., and now in the hands of Army Corps of Engineers’ Lake Lanier Project Management Office at Buford Dam. The hand-drawn maps are not the originals used in building the lake, according to the Army Corps of Engineers, but they still give an early representation of what the region looked like before Lake Lanier was formed.

I think it was down 13 feet,” Bennett said.Bennett said it was unsafe for boaters who didn’t know the lake.With the levels down, hazards usually hidden in the lake are now in full view.“You need to know the lake and the channels. You need to stay where the water is deep enough.
