At Stanford University’s 2024 graduation ceremony, hearts swelled with pride as a remarkable 105-year-old student, Virginia Hislop, fulfilled a dream eight decades in the making: earning her master’s degree in education.

n 1940, Virginia was set to finish her master’s thesis when World War II began. She bravely supported the war effort alongside her husband, George, and later dedicated herself to enhancing educational opportunities through her career and service on school boards.

Despite the passage of time, Virginia’s passion for learning never waned. When she discovered the thesis requirement had been waived, she seized the opportunity to return to Stanford and complete what she started.

Surrounded by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Virginia donned her cap and gown, finally receiving her well-deserved diploma to thunderous applause. “For many people, the degree is a badge of accomplishment,” remarked Stanford Dean Daniel Schwartz, “and it was a privilege to celebrate someone who has devoted her life to learning and others’ education.”

Her son-in-law describes Virginia as a woman of boundless energy—always volunteering, exploring her garden, and devouring books—and exemplifies resilience and a lifelong commitment to knowledge.

Join us in honouring Virginia Hislop’s extraordinary journey and celebrating the enduring spirit of learning at any age.
